About video and audio conversion
Containers, codecs and why the distinction matters
MP4 and MOV are containers: boxes that hold a video stream, an audio stream and timing information. H.264 and AAC are codecs: the compression inside the box. The MOV converter copies H.264 video when possible, re-encodes other supported video to H.264, and encodes audio as AAC. MP4 to MP3 extracts and re-encodes the audio; it discards video. Converting to GIF means throwing away the codec entirely and storing frames as images, which is why GIFs are so large.
Keep the file small on purpose
Three settings control the size of almost any media conversion: how long the clip is, how many pixels each frame holds, and how many frames or kilobits per second you keep. Width is the strongest lever because pixel count grows with the square, so halving the width quarters the data. Bitrate is the next: 192 kbps audio is transparent for speech and most music, and going higher makes a bigger file rather than a better one.
Video and audio conversion: common questions
Where do video and audio conversions run?
All four media tools run on your device. The first conversion downloads about 31 MB of software from this site. Your files are never uploaded. A desktop or laptop is best for larger videos.
How long can my video be?
Media files up to 100 MB are accepted. GIF clips can be up to 30 seconds. Large files may exceed device memory; jobs stop after ten minutes.
Does converting reduce video quality?
MOV to MP4 preserves H.264 video without re-encoding. Other video codecs and audio are re-encoded, which can change quality. MP3 bitrate and GIF dimensions, duration and frame rate are adjustable.
