About document conversion

Editable or final

A document is either something you are still working on or something you are handing over. Word formats keep it editable and let the layout move when the reader has different fonts. PDF freezes it, which is what you want for a contract, a CV or an invoice. Plain text keeps only the words, which is exactly right when the text is heading into another program.

What survives a conversion

The available PDF-to-Text tool extracts existing text and keeps page order and available line breaks. Fonts, images, interactive links and table layout are not preserved. Multi-column text may need cleanup, and image-only scans need OCR elsewhere. Word conversion and text-to-PDF are not available yet.

Document conversion: common questions

Will my layout survive?

Word and text-to-PDF conversions are not available yet. PDF to Text extracts existing text without preserving the page layout; review the downloaded text before using it.

Which document formats are supported?

PDF to Text is available for extracting existing text from PDF files. Word to PDF, PDF to Word and TXT to PDF are planned and cannot convert files yet.

Is the converted text searchable?

Yes. Text is carried across as real text rather than as a picture of text, so the result stays selectable, searchable and readable by a screen reader.
