About this converter
Same video, friendlier wrapper
MOV and MP4 are containers. H.264 video is copied without changing its picture quality. Other supported video codecs are converted to H.264, and audio is converted to AAC for broad playback compatibility. Re-encoding takes longer and can change quality.
Where it matters
Windows Media Player, plenty of Android devices, TV media players and a long list of upload forms accept MP4 and stumble on MOV. Editing software is the same story. Converting first saves the round trip of discovering the problem after a slow upload.
MOV to MP4: common questions
Will I lose quality?
H.264 video is copied without quality loss. Other video codecs and audio are re-encoded, which can change quality. Keep your original file as a master.
Are 4K and 60 fps videos supported?
Large, high-resolution videos may exceed your browser memory or take too long. The file limit is 100 MB. HDR colour preservation is not guaranteed when re-encoding; shorter standard-dynamic-range clips work best.
What about ProRes files from a camera?
ProRes has to be re-encoded to fit in an MP4, so those conversions take longer and produce a much smaller file, which is normally the point.
Is audio kept?
Audio tracks are kept and converted to AAC. A silent MOV also works and produces a silent MP4.
