How it works

How to convert MP4 to GIF

Keep it short

GIF stores every frame as its own image with at most 256 colours, so it is a heavy format by modern standards. Three to five seconds at 480 pixels wide and 15 frames per second gives a clip that looks good and stays under a couple of megabytes. Thirty seconds at full width will produce a file nobody wants to load.

The four settings that matter

Start time and duration trim the clip. Width scales it down, which is the single most effective way to cut size. Frame rate controls smoothness: 15 is fluid enough for most motion, 10 is acceptable for slow movement and saves a third. GIF has no audio track, so any sound in the source is dropped.

Why is my GIF so large?

Length, width and frame rate all multiply together. Halving the width cuts the pixel count to a quarter, so start there, then shorten the clip, then drop the frame rate.

Will the colours look right?

GIF is limited to 256 colours per frame, so gradients and skin tones can band slightly. A palette is chosen from the clip itself to keep this as unobtrusive as possible.

Can I keep the audio?

No, the format has no audio support. If you need sound, keep the MP4 or convert to WebM instead.

What is the maximum clip length?

Clips up to 30 seconds convert. Beyond that a GIF is the wrong tool, and a short MP4 will be smaller and look better.
