How to convert JPG to PNG

What PNG gives you

PNG stores pixels exactly as they are, so every save after this one is lossless. That matters when a file is going to be cropped, annotated, resized and saved again: each round trip through JPG softens the image a little more, while PNG never does.

An honest note about size

PNG files are usually larger than the JPG they came from, sometimes several times larger, because there is no lossy compression doing the heavy lifting. The detail already discarded by the original JPG cannot be recovered either. Convert for the editing headroom and the transparency support, not to improve a photograph.

JPG to PNG: common questions

Does converting to PNG improve the photo?

No. It stops further loss from here on, but whatever the JPG discarded when it was first saved is gone for good. Think of it as freezing the image where it is.

Why is my PNG bigger than the JPG?

That is expected. PNG is lossless, so a detailed photograph needs a lot more data. For a screenshot or a flat graphic the difference is small, and PNG can even come out smaller.

Can I add a transparent background?

The converted PNG supports transparency, but a JPG has none to carry over, so the image arrives fully opaque. Removing a background is an editing job rather than a format change.

Is the conversion private?

Completely. It runs in your browser, so no image is uploaded and there is nothing stored on our side.
